Before BASE. Before Quick & Dirty. Before LIVE. There was a compilation EP from Bassline Rumble and a camera. Zezo One ran a contest, four producers submitted tracks, four got selected, and WOMP TV was there to document the moment each of them found out their music was going to be released for the first time. That is the whole premise. And in that simplicity — four artists, four first releases, one camera — the entire WOMP TV mission is already present.
Slogun — ‘Gone Away’
Slogun grew up in Ojai, just outside Ventura. His early sets were house parties and college parties — no regular club bookings yet, but the ambition was already pointed outward. The Bassline Rumble track was his first legitimate release, submitted two days before the deadline. He had been sitting on it deliberately, planning to use it as the opening move of his public career. Getting selected confirmed the instinct.
I submitted it two days before the deadline and crossed my fingers. I’d been working on that track for a long time — it was always going to be the first one I put out to get my name out there.
Logikal — ‘Play’
Logikal is from Los Angeles, representing Signal Flow Radio — a Tuesday night show on DMVNoise.com. At the time of this interview he was playing Resonate in Lancaster and had a new tune out on Juno Records available through Big Heavy Music. More releases were queued for Elevated Press and Serious War Recordings later in the year. A producer already working multiple channels simultaneously, treating the compilation as one node in a larger network he was building.
Recognition is good. Zezo’s doing a great job with the website — and I’ve got tunes coming out on Juno, Elevated Press, and Serious War later this year.
Sharps — ‘Solid Ground’
Sharps — Dennis Sharps — is originally from New Jersey and had been working the Los Angeles drum and bass scene for four years at the time of filming. He ran with two crews: Upgrade Drum & Bass Jungle Theory in Orange County and DJ Logical’s Signal Flow in LA. The Bassline Rumble selection landed alongside four other tracks he had lined up for the accompanying mix release, with more compilation credits in the pipeline. Just getting started — but moving with purpose.
Natural Frequency — ‘Holy War’
Natural Frequency is a duo — Boxmon and his partner, also known as Nighty Freak — from Orange County. Dubstep and jungle grime, with affiliations across Jungle Recordings, Baseline Rumble, and Adrenaline Crew. Zezo One heard their music on SoundCloud, picked a track, and asked if he could have it. Their answer: take it. Coming up: a collaboration with Tenor Fly on Jungle Wooden Recordings, releases with Bunny General and General John Mikey, and a remix of Subsonics’ ‘Inside Out.’ A crew quietly building something serious.
He just found us on SoundCloud, picked one, said he liked it and was going to take it. We let him take it. You help them, they help you — hopefully we all push each other and make the scene bigger.
Why This Matters
None of the four artists in this video had a major release credit at the time of filming. None had played a headline show. None would have had a media platform documenting this moment if WOMP TV hadn’t shown up with a camera. That is the founding act. Not a business plan. Not a content strategy. Just a camera pointed at people who deserved to be seen, in a scene that deserved to be documented.
Everything that came after — BASE, Quick & Dirty, LIVE, the interviews with Gridlok and Noah D and KJ Sawka and DJ Qbert — has its roots in this room, in this moment, in 2010. This is where WOMP TV started.
